The Queen Inaugurates Jaguar Land Rover Ingenium Engine Plant

While most people consider the all-new Jaguar XE as being a way to wash the sins of the Ford Mondeo-based X-Type, the British automaker's new entry in the compact executive segment is also a test bed for new powertrain technology. More specifically, the brand spanking new Ingenium engine family.

Compared to the petrol and diesel-fed mills of yesteryear, Ingenium-branded powerplants are 100 percent Jaguar Land Rover products. From development to manufacturing, the consortium is in total control of the new generation of engines.

As a brief reminder, the Ingenium family consists of a 2.0 four-cylinder turbo diesel (163 PS and 380 Nm or 180 PS and 380 Nm) and a turbo petrol with either 200 PS and 280 Nm or 240 PS and 340 Nm of twist.

The 163 PS entry-level oil burner is JLR's most efficient engine to date, drinking just 75 UK mpg (62.4 US mpg or 3.76 liters of diesel / 100 km) and emitting 99 grams of CO2 / km on the combined cycle.

As for the complex that'll be building the previously mentioned powerhouses, Jaguar Land Rover only recently inaugurated the state-of-the-art facility near Wolverhampton in the West Midlands, Great Britain. Officially known as the Engine Manufacturing Centre, this factory is the result of a hefty £500 million investment, a grand sum of pounds sterling that also saw the creation of 1,400 new jobs.

Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip were on hand at the opening event and it's no wonder why - the Engine Manufacturing Center represents the first time in eons since Jaguar Land Rover made its own, in-house developed engines. The British Monarchy was especially enthusiastic, as you can see below.
