The Portrait of Marcus Syring, the Head of Exterior Design at MINI

In the last few years MINI launched a number of new models in order to fill every possible niche available on the market. That is only the beginning, as the future UKL platform will be the starting point of 7 new MINI models.

That means that the head designer of the BMW owned brand will have a lot of work to do, in order to keep up with the times and the customer requests. Marcus Syring has been the Head of Exterior Design at MINI since 2002 and his work preceded him with a number of BMW models.

He was the brain behind the design of the BMW Z3 roadster, a rare and beautiful car. Following the success the Z3 had, the BMW managing team decided to appoint him as Head of Exterior Design at MINI.

Marcus joined BMW as soon as he finished his studies in product design at the University of Wuppertal, working at the Motorsport division of BMW at the beginning of his career in 1991. In 1997, he joined the Design Department of BMW Technik just to be moving on to the MINI Design Department only 3 years later. In just 2 years he managed to become the MINI Head Exterior Designer, an impressive performance nonetheless.

He worked on the MINI Coupe and the MINI Roadster following his passion for little sport cars that started with the making of the Z3 Roadster. Today, he's looking back at the design of the Z3 and considers it a milestone in his career as well as the design for the new MINI Clubman.

The design of a car has 3 main aspects, in the vision of Syring: the physical, technical function, the esthetic function and the symbolic function. That is why he was named the Head of Exterior Design at MINI, a brand that takes pride in the fact that functionality is at home in a small, premium car.

We're proud that BMW takes the time to honor those that make the Bavarian brand stand out in the crowd. The people behind the cars are just as important as the cars themselves. Without them we would all be driving dull cars with no personality that would make our daily struggle even harder to bear.
