The Original Griswolds Are Back for Mustang Mach-E Take on “Christmas Vacation”

Everyone tries to be as original as possible during the Christmas period. Automakers have long joined the party with sometimes funny, sometimes odd ideas. This year, the Blue Oval has decided to bridge the gap between (funny) past and (electric) future and brought back part of the original cast from “National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation” for a cheerful Mustang Mach-E marketing stunt.

Some carmakers have decided that we should relax next to the Christmas tree while playing with sheets of paper to build origami-inspired scale models. Others are trying to push our aftermarket ego into stalking Santa. A few even decided that old guy needs a new sleigh.

Ford, on the other hand, decided to try and bridge the generational gap. It’s not entirely original, but at least the company did go for the original cast of the National Lampoon's Vacation series – not the ones from the 2015 installment headed by Ed Helms and Christina Applegate. Yes, in case you failed to notice the irony, we think the latter party definitely misses on the charm, wit, and heart marks by a mile.

Anyway, the Blue Oval easily brought us into a 1980’s nostalgic mood with their reintroduction of Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo in their iconic National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation roles of Clark and Ellen Griswold for this short feature.

Both are a bit older than last time they (really) played the characters, and even though they’re rougher around the edges, we’re glad they still have their own senses of irony with them.

For example, Chase clearly gives away the reasons he did the spot, commenting that “it’s great to be back for another Christmas with my on-screen family and its rotating assortment of kids – and I have Ford and Mustang Mach-E to thank for paying me to do it.”

By the way, Ford is probably not going to feel the brunt of Chase's and D’Angelo’s paychecks if the Mustang Mach-E turns out to be the electrified star the company hopes it will.

As far as pricing is concerned, the 2021 Mustang Mach-E kicks off at $42,895 in Select configuration and presents itself with a 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) sprint of 3.8 seconds and a 250-mile (402-km) range in GT eAWD guise.
