You don't need us to tell you that the Dakar Rally is the world's most extreme and demanding cross-country competition. Even if you know nothing about the Dakar, watching the trailer after the jump will make you understand how things roll in this race.
It's hard to tell which of the classes is the toughest, as trucks, cars, quads and bikes have their particularities, and racing with each of these vehicles doesn't come without major risks.

Still, given the fact that bikes have to move to stay upright, we'd say that the riders who line up at the start of this rally are probably some of the toughest, most hardcore fellows that roam the motorcycling world.

And the image on the Dakar Rally would not be complete without reminding you that there are also ladies who ride. Ride and finish 9th, that is, in case you thought that women were "just there."

Grueling conditions put both driver and machines to the toughest test

The Dakar 2016 will only tackle Argentina and Bolivia after Chile and Peru could no longer take part in organizing their corresponding legs. Still, there are plenty of obstacles in these two countries alone to make the 2015 edition look less fierce than we perceived it.

From high mountain passes to desert dunes, brine-soaked flats to dry river beds that can become flooded in minutes, from below zero at night to searing 40C+ temperatures and everything in between, the Dakar is a long and merciless test.

Merely finishing is, by itself, more rewarding than most other achievements in sport. Winning stages taps into the superpowers realm, and winning the Dakar grants the alien status that's comparable with anything else at the top of...anything! Cometh January 3, and stay with us for daily coverage!
