The RV industry has been booming since the pandemic, with more and more businesses emerging lately. Having looked only at manufacturers, today I wanted to check out a brand specializing in custom van conversions.
Nomad RVs is a company based in Lakewood, New Jersey. Steven, the owner, set his sights on creating a business that helps customers adopt the van life. With the help of the New Jersey Outdoor Adventures YouTube channel, today we're looking at a converted Mercedes Sprinter called the Oasis, one of Nomad RV's builds that features its signature mark,
But first, let me tell you how this company's van conversion process works. A quick look at their website will reveal that they have a six-step building process. Long story short, you must contact them and agree on a plan and pricing, then you'll have to pay a $5,000 deposit, and you'll be scheduled depending on availability. You'll have to get them the van at least one week before they start converting it. Once it's in their hands, the last step is to come pick it up and start exploring. If this process seems too complicated for you, Nomad RVs also has a few vans available to buy directly.
Let's see what this conversion is all about. One glance at its exterior, and besides the three 175 W solar panels on the roof, there isn't anything that stands out to make you believe this is a camper.
But once you slide the door, you'll see the level of craftsmanship that Nomad RVs offer. Straight ahead, you'll discover a center galley kitchen, about 18 inches (46 centimeters) wide. It features three sliding drawers, a small fridge/freezer, and a deep stainless sink connected to a 6-gallon (23-liter) grey tank. Some beautiful touches are the quartz countertop, standard on their vans, and a tiled splashproof wall where you can find the main switches for the lights, water pump, and heater. Just above, there's a decently sized microwave.
If you look up, you'll also notice a bunch of drawers running along both sides of the interior and a clear-coated cedar wood ceiling. You'll see eight dimmable lights scattered along the top, the primary illumination source in the van, as it doesn't feature any windows. There's also a roof A/C.
The lounge area is pretty spacious; using the two cushions that make up the sofas, you can convert it into an almost king-size bed. It also features two large dinette tables that can be moved for you to create your ideal setup.
Lift the cushions, and you'll find extra storage, a heater and water pump on one side, and the power systems on the other. Let me tell you a bit more about them without boring you too much. There's a heater, two 12V 300Ah batteries (with a generous 10-year warranty), a charger, a 3,000W inverter connected to the solar panels, and breakers.
Of course, I saved the best part for last. Slide the waterproof door, and you'll be greeted by an absolutely massive shower and bath area, which also doubles as a storage area. A waterproof vinyl tile surrounds it, so you can throw your bike and other equipment in without worrying about scratching them. It's a multipurpose space, and you have complete freedom to use it as you wish. The Oasis van in the video has a cassette toilet, but you can opt for an integrated one if you wish. Above, you have a small fan to drive the humidity out.
Nomad RVs vans come with a hitch capable of 5,000 lbs. (2,267 kg) towing and a 12-gallon (45-liter) grey tank. The best part when hiring a company to create your dream van is that even though it provides some features as standard, you have the liberty of asking it to customize it the way you please. The sky's the limit; just make sure your bank account is ready.
The base conversion costs around $55,000 to $58,000 and depending on the options, the price can go a bit higher. Nomad RVs convert other vans like the Ram ProMaster; check with them before buying a vehicle you'd wish to transform. Oh, and it doesn't have to be brand new.
Overall, I love Nomad RVs work with this Sprinter. Even though the conversion might prove a bit pricey, at least you know you'll have a premium vehicle to go out and have the adventures you've dreamt of.
