In what tends to become an unwanted tradition at the New York International Auto Show (NYIAS), four people were shot and some other 50 were arrested on Monday, after they wreaked havoc near Times Square. According to police, the disturbance is in relation with the NYIAS event, from where the group of assailants originated.
According to nzherald.co.nz, a group of teenagers and young adults started a skirmish on the New York streets, harassing pedestrians near the A. Javits Center. It is not the first time such incidents happen during the NYIAS show, so police already had additional officers patrolling the area.
"Young men looking for trouble afterwards," Police spokesman Paul J. Browne was quoted as saying by the source. "There have been incidents over the years. It's something we watch over and we prepare for it in advance."
Shots were fired during the skirmish, with four people being non-fatally shot. A man was shot in the ankle at Eighth Avenue and 40th Street shortly after midnight, while a woman was shot with a BB gun several blocks northeast. A few hours later, two other women were shot - one in the elbow and another in the thigh.
Four people, three males ages 17 to 23 and a teenage girl, were arrested in relation to the shootings and charged with gang-related assault. Fifty other people were arrested on disorderly conduct.
"We're not going to tolerate it," New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "This is just a bunch of people who shouldn't be on the streets if they behave this way and we're not going to stand for it."
At this point, police don't know what started the whole thing.
