The Nightmare a Simple Google Maps Error Can Create

Google Maps isn’t only the world’s most used navigation app out there, but also the solution plenty of companies turn to for their services.
For example, food delivery companies adopt Google Maps to better optimize their services, which means the accuracy of data provided by Google is critical for their customers.

A Londoner whose story was recently highlighted by The Guardian reveals just how troublesome simple Google Maps errors can become, explaining that in the last three years, Uber drivers, food delivery services, and pretty much anybody who wanted to reach his flat ended up in the middle of the park.

And it’s all because a Google Maps update changed its postcode in 2018, with his home suddenly relocated to a completely different place that has nothing to do with where he lives.

In theory, this isn’t such a big problem because Google should take care of it anyway. Indeed, Google does allow users to report map errors, only that the man says he was unsuccessful in every single attempt to reach out to the company and get his postcode right.

In Chrome, I’ve tried the ‘send feedback’ approach to alert ‘wrong information’ – these tickets were closed without any answers. I’ve also tried to add our full address through ‘add a missing place’, which wasn’t successful, either,” he explains.

I’ve tried five or six times to post a question here but never get a reply,” he continues adding he also reached out to Google support on a support forum.

While the problem has eventually been corrected after the aforementioned source contacted the search giant, this isn’t the only case when Google Maps errors turn the experience for some into a small nightmare.

Not a long time ago, we highlighted another similar case, this time from Norway, where drivers were sent on a steep tractor road where passenger cars get stuck every time. The property owner says they reached out to Google Maps several times, but an answer has never been received, despite a worrying number of drivers eventually ending up asking for help to get back on the road.
