The NHTSA Investigates Can-Am Fire Reports

It looks like there is something wrong with certain Can-Am Spyder models, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is said to investigate reports of new fires. This has happened in the past, because of certain issues with the fuel cap, vent hose and even a brake line. Still, it looks like more models are affected by the problem(s) being investigated, and we’re about to find out more from the NHTSA and Can-Am soon.

NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) claims that the two recent fires appear to be unrelated with the problems addressed by the three recalls during the past 19 months, so a completely new fire hazard might plague these three-wheelers.

Federal investigators from the Office are analyzing a July 20 fire involving a 2011 Spyder RT used by the Morgantown, West Virginia PD, and a similar incident which occurred on July 26, with the 2013 Spyder RT SE5 catching on fire in the Mojave desert, California. Info and photos of the second fire were posted on the Spyderlovers online community, and this is how the ODI found out about the whole affair.

A preliminary inquiry was initiated and the ODI is investigating the following models:

- 2013 Spyder
- 2008-12 Spyder GS and RS
- 2008-14 Spyder RT
- 2010 Spyder RTS
- 2013 Spyder ST.

No injuries have been mentioned in relation with these two new fires. As the NHTSA investigation goes deeper, we might just receive a new recall notice for certain models shortly. Below you can watch a 2013 Spyder RT which caught on fire last year.
