The New 2009 Superlight R300 from Caterham

Caterham are in the business of making wickedly fun cars to drive and awesome looking too. The Lotus Sevens have turned that conception into legend and made kit car and racing enthusiasts swear by this brand. Well, good news folks, Caterham has just released a new version of its best selling model, the Superlight R300.

Powered by a 2.0 liter Ford Duratec engine, the car can accelerate from nought to sixty miles in 4.5 seconds and can get to a top speed of 140 mph. The engine is coupled with a six-speed manual gearbox that will help you shave seconds off that lap time. The engine was tuned by Caterham Powertrain and now has 175 bhp.

The model was originally released in 2002 with a Rover engine and has been Caterham's best selling model since then, thanks to it's handling and reliability on and off the track. It manages to keep the minimalist lines that were first designed by Colin Chapman, and that's why it manages to weigh in at just 515 kg, which brings the whole power-to-weight ratio to a staggering 339 bhp-per-tone.

The R300 takes some of its design features and technical innovations off its “big brother”, the R500, like the similar flush button dash design and the keyless ignition system that now come as standard on the R300.

For those of you who aren't afraid to take their car to the race track, the Caterham now let's you store data logging instrumentation on board as well as a dry sump oil system and a limited-slip differential.

The starting price is 24,995 pounds sterling and 27,995 pounds including delivery. The starting date on the delivery is spring 2009 so better get your affairs in order if you're planning to make a purchase.
