As some of you recall, a few shows back, the three hosts of probably the most watched TV auto show in the explored universe engaged in their usual brainstorming fun. At the center of the debate were Mexican cars in particular and Mexicans in general. We won't go into the details again, as plenty has been said on the subject; enough to say that the conclusion of the brainstorming session was that Mexicans and their cars are lazy, feckless, flatulent, oaf with a moustache leaning against a fence asleep.
After several encounters with the Mexican diplomatic corps, BBC issued what can largely be regarded as an apology. Until now, however, when Hammond spoke his mind in an interview with Drive, the Top Gear hosts have kept silent on the subject.
Hammond, following the official network policy, tried some sort of apology, but lost himself in defending the Top Gear colleagues and the way in which they conduct business.
"One of the reasons Top Gear works is because we are three fairly ordinary blokes. You can identify with one or the other of us, be it age, height, presentation or manner ... and one of the traits we bring together as a team is a certain outspoken quality," Hammond said. "And we're occasionally naughty. Who isn't?"
And naughty they are. As if trying to enforce Hammond's words, one day after they were laid down on paper, head honcho Jeremy Clarkson jumped at Katie Price's ride calling it a “pink whore’s box.”
Enough said? Not quite. When asked by Hammond to repeat what he said, Clarkson cleverly replied “Horsebox, what did you think I said?“
And the fun will probably continue.
