The Mysterious Origin of the Ducati Scrambler and Its Creators

Who invented the Ducati Scrambler 1 photo

Ducati Scrambler is arguably one of the most iconic motorcycles launched in 2014, together with the new Kawasaki Ninja H2 and its racing H2R version. However, the Scrambler gets the upper hand because of its addressability and affordable price. Unlike the high-tech, expensive and exclusive (by their limited numbers) Ninja H2 machines, the Scrambler has all the chances to become Ducati’s best-seller.
Slotting lower on the price scale than Borgo Panigale’s other bikes and with a design which mixes retro and modern cues, the Scrambler is also a versatile two-wheeler, as it can do both commuting and travel, with no objections regarding the quality of the riding surface. Scramblers have always been a very interesting segment, both in stock trim and especially in custom guises, and it looks like Ducati’s hit the bullseye.

Who invented the Scramblers?

Now, we do not claim that Ducati was the first company which delivered such a bike, and the purpose of these lines is not to establish who coined this class. The video below is, however, an important piece of motorcycling history, as it reveals the Scrambler story through the testimonies of two guys who have been involved with Ducati back in those days, Giorgio Monetti and Leopoldo Tartarini.

Monetti and Tartarini have tied their names to Ducati for ever after they completed a world-round trip on Bologna machines between September 1957 and the same moth of 1958. The two have different views on how Ducati’s Scrambler came into being, but again, the purpose of this documentary is only to shed some light over the bike’s history. It looks like not even Ducati can trace the early days of the Scrambler, so we’ll just have to make do with these two versions.

Anyway, with the massive attention the bike got thanks to the teaser campaign before it was unveiled and the Most Beautiful Bike title bagged at EICMA 2014, we can predict that Ducati’s four Scrambler versions are definitely going to sell like hot cakes.
