The Mysterious BMW Vehicle Was an.... i3

Saturday we told you about a teaser published by BMW on their German Youtube channel. In it, the company showed us just the front left wheel of a mysterious vehicle that seemed to be going around Munich at an appreciable speed. At the time we were intrigued.

That’s because we knew for sure that was an i3 wheel but the sounds in the background didn’t make sense. The i3 is an all-electric vehicle, built for mega cities and, even though it can be fitted with an optional range-extending 650cc internal combustion engine, it will never sound like that. Ever!

So, what was the catch? Plenty of you answered and gave your own thoughts about what car was in those shots but in the end, we were all fooled by BMW that played a joke on us. Yes, that was an i3 with the sound of a video game in the background. That’s all there was.

Now, we do get the message they’re trying to send here (‘the silent revolution is here’) but teasing us like that wasn’t very cool on their behalf. That’s because we were all starting to dream about all sorts of incredible machines.

And it’s downright easy to start dreaming when you know how the i3 and i8 came to life and are built. Their bodies are made up of tons of Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer or CFRP, aluminum and all sorts of other lightweight materials, making them lightyears ahead of the next best thing (pun intended).

Just consider how awesome a car as light as the i3 would be with a turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine like.... let’s say the N55 units. It would be pretty good, wouldn’t it?
