The Most Expensive Car In the World Is For Sale

In the early 1960s, when a guy called Enzo was running the business with an iron fist, the Prancing Horse produced what is now revered as the world’s most revered Ferrari: the 250 GTO. 33 Series I examples were made, making the 250 GTO a rare machine.

The blue bird featured in this story’s main picture is one of those 250 GTOs, the second one built by Ferrari's best men and the first to see racing action. Bearer of serial number 3387GT, the go-faster machine has a vivid history under its belt and a price to match it: £45 million, i.e. just about $55.7 million.

Ladies and gents, provided that you have a bucketload of pounds sterling to burn, you can spend them on this car here. And once the peeps over at Talacrest take your money, you’ll be able to boast to your significant other and best buddies that you own the most expensive car ever sold publicly.

Talacrest, which is a specialized Ferrari dealer located in Ascot, UK, reports that the second-ever 250 GTO is owned by Bernard J. Carl since September 1997. Before deciding to part ways with it, the car made its last public appearance in July 2012 at the 50th Anniversary Ferrari 250 GTO Tour in France. At origin, however, the race-ready Prancing Horse was born in 1962.

After factory testing was done, chassis 3387GT was eventually sold to Luigi Chinetti Motors in New York in March 1962, then raced in multiple world-renowned events by a flurry of world-class drivers. Its race history consists of a 2nd overall and first-in-class finishes at the 1962 12 Hours of Sebring, plus a well-deserved first in the 3,000 cc class at the 1962 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It’s hard to put a price on what the Ferrari 250 GTO is all about, but at £45 million, chassis 3387GT seems to be the perfect Christmas gift for the gearhead in you. What’s more, bear in mind that 250 GTOs usually change heads behind closed doors with the help of specialized brokers. The opportunity of buying directly from the dealer, cash down, is yet another detail that adds up to the specialness of owning this particular Ferrari.
