While some spend fortunes to buy watches plated with diamonds, other people enjoys spending tens of hours turning old broken ones in real works of art. It’s the case of Dmitry Khristenko, an American born in Ukraine that decided he would spend his life turning timepieces in miniature motorcycles and cars.
The 40-year old artist’s passion is probably one of the best ways one can use time in an useful way. The artist moved in America 15 years ago and started looking for time. Well, not for time literally, but for the instrument we measure it with: old watches.
When he is not on the way scouring the markets, the garage sales and even the trash cans to find them, he spends up to 50 hours to transform the watches in miniature motorcycles and cars. Once he obtains them, he carefully takes each piece apart by hand before putting them back together into their new configuration.
When finished, he sells the beautiful pieces of art for more than $475 (£282). Now that is what you call a good deal.
We have to say, considering a normal McLaren or Ferrari scale model would cost up to thousands of dollars, the Ukrainian artist might even end up adding some competition to the market.
