Land Rover stopped producing the Freelander 1 in 2006, but even now, after ten years and a lot of other models, the classic 4x4 remains one of the brand’s best-selling models. The British carmaker decided to make the hugely popular model a Land Rover Heritage Vehicle.
A Heritage model is defined as a vehicle that has been out of production for longer than ten years. Being produced between 1999 and 2006, when it was replaced by the Freelander 2, the compact premium 4x4 is more than entitled to be part of this select category, which includes other British classics such as the Series I, II and III, Range Rover Classic and P38 Range Rover, plus Discovery 1 and 2.

The Land Rover Heritage division is specialized in cars, services, parts and experiences for classic Land Rover models, and ever since the production of the Freelander 1 concluded, the company continued to support owners by supplying spare parts. Now, it’s time for the Heritage experts to make sure the loyal owners continue to enjoy their classic 4x4s for many years to come, with over 9000 individual Land Rover Heritage Part numbers for the Freelander 1.

Tim Hanning, Director at Jaguar Land Rover, stated that “With the addition of the Freelander 1 as a Heritage model, Land Rover is reaffirming its support and commitment to its loyal customers,” and because the parts for this iconic model are tested in extreme conditions, “...it gives our customers total piece-of-mind that their vehicles are maintained to the highest possible standards,” Hanning concluded.

Designed by Gerry McGovern and launched in late 1997, the Freelander 1 soon became a leader in the compact premium 4x4 class, thanks to its 16 patented features including Hill Descent Control (HDC), Immediate Reduction Drive (IDR), a viscous-coupling (VCU) and an innovative ABS system designed specifically for off-road situations. After its launch, the model rapidly became Europe's best-selling 4WD vehicle for five consecutive years.
