The most pirated show ever is back, but you’ll have to wait until January 18th to watch the first episode of Season 3 on Amazon Prime Video. According to the producers, Richard Hammond will be “once again risking one of his nine lives as he struggles to keep his Jeep on a tiny bridge over a steep canyon in Colombia.”
Another episode of Season 3 sees the three amigos head down to Detroit and Nevada, testing two ponies and a muscle car in the process. The nameplates in question are the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, Ford Mustang RTR Spec 3, and Camaro ZL1-based Exorcist from Hennessey Performance Engineering.
A tour of the Stansted Airport, Mongolia, and China are also included, as well as “an unusual snowy challenge in Sweden” and “James May playing the bagpipes in Scotland.” From RVs to American muscle, hypercars to Italian classics and grand tourers, as well as the Mercedes-Benz X-Class, the third season of The Grand Tour has something for everyone.
After 24 episodes, the producers haven’t confirmed how many there are left to go for season three. The deal with Amazon stipulates a total of 36 over a three-year period, meaning that The Grand Tour has 12 in the pipeline for 2019.
Amazon gave the team a mind-boggling budget of £160 million for these 36 episodes, translating to an average of £4.5 million per episode. Looking back at Jeremy, Richard, and James when they were doing Top Gear for the BBC, this type of budget is serious by all accounts.
One of the biggest reasons the show is so expensive is the 4K filming and the hardware involved, along with travel and crew expenses. At the end of the day, though, world-class entertainment is created with world-class top budgets.
Earlier this year, there were rumors The Grand Tour would be cancelled after the third season finishes airing. It all started from the British tabloid media, but Clarkson disagrees with the hearsay. Taking the matter to Twitter, the 58-year-old presenter from Doncaster described the rumors as “horse s**t.”
