Apple’s CarPlay now allows third-party apps to take over the maps card on the dashboard, but unfortunately, developers don’t necessarily seem to be in a rush to make this happen.
Obviously, everybody expects Google to update Google Maps and Waze with such a feature, but until that happens, the options to replace Apple Maps on the CarPlay dashboard come down to just one app.
It’s a less-known app that’s called Magic Earth Navigation & Maps, which received dashboard support in April and which has since received several additional refinements.
The most recent update, for example, which brings the app to version 7.4.1, polishes the experience on CarPlay, but the parent company hasn’t provided any details as to what exactly it improves. However, given Magic Earth remains the only app that can be used on the dashboard, all these updates are without a doubt welcome.
Last month, Magic Earth has also been updated with support for Shortcuts on the iPhone, an app that allows users to create a series of automations.
“Now you can ask Siri to start a navigation with Magic Earth and by voice set your destination. Please use Shortcuts app to configure Magic Earth Siri Shortcuts,” the changelog reads.
So when should we expect Google to add support for the dashboard in its super-popular navigation apps? Unfortunately, there’s not much we know in this regard, as the search giant has remained completely tight-lipped on this set of improvements for CarPlay.
The good thing is that Google Maps and Waze receive updates regularly on iPhone, so hopefully it won’t take too long until dashboard support goes live too. In the meantime, Magic Earth remains the only app that can replace Apple Maps on the CarPlay dashboard, so if you’re pleased with what this app has to offer in terms of navigation features, then you’re pretty much good to go.
