The Nissan GT-R is one of the best handling vehicles is the world, thanks to its smart four wheel drive system that is more than a loving mother to each of the car’s wheels. But this also means that the car gets a good standing start, so it is also suitable for drag races.
Just that the car’s transmission doesn’t seem to handle repeated sudden starts all that well. Some tuners disregarded this issue, throw extra horses in, rev the engine and end up by blowing the gearbox.
However, this does not seem to be the case with the U.S.-based AMS Performance tuner, which has created the fastest quarter mile GT-R. The 850 hp AMS Nissan GT-R SR850 was recently unleashed at the TX2K10 Supra & GTR Nationals event, held in Houston, Texas, where it managed to post a quarter mile time of 9.89 seconds @145.98 mph. If the tuning program doesn’t ruin the car’s reliability, this is a mind-blowing achievement, considering that a Corvette ZR1 needs 11.2 seconds to cover the quarter mile (@135 mph), while in a Bugatti Veyron the job takes 10.2 seconds (@139.9 mph).
The tuning package installed on the GT-R comprises of custom ball bearing turbochargers, 90mm cat-less downpipes (the catalytic converters can be installed on demand), 90mm resonated mid-pipe, a new intercooler that uses bespoke piping and HKS blow off valves, high flow intake piping, K&N air filters, upgraded fuel injectors and an ECU Remap.
After receiving all the aforementioned modifications, the 3.8 liter V6 unit that originally developed 485 hp produces 850 hp (on race gas - as used in the drag run) or 750 hp (on pump gas).
AMS Performance claims that the kit has been engineered to offer reliability and will not compromise the everyday drivability of the car.
