If you’re not a BMW aficionado, you’ll probably be wondering what is up with all the excitement surrounding the launch of the so-called F80 M3. Well, for those people, the guys from Electric Federal put together a video, telling the story behind the BMW M3.

Over the years we’ve seen four M3 models. It may seem like a small number, but all iterations of the high-performance daily-driver car made history in their respective eras. From the 1986 E30 M3 all the way up to the current E90 M3 and in the future, this car is all about performance.

The original M3, the E30 was powered by an engine that derived from the legendary 6-cylinder unit that powered BMW’s only supercar so far, the M1. Even though at the beginning it wasn’t extremely popular, after proving its worth on the DTM tracks, where it defeated the Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.3-16 and the Audi quattro, the first M3 became one of the best selling cars to come out of Munich.

The E36 wasn’t as popular but its replacement, the E46 brought forward the S54 engine and the M3 was, once again, king. Its high-revving 6 cylinders and the amazing power output of 333 HP were the recipe to making the E46 a worthy candidate for the title of the best M3 ever built.

Last but not least, the E90 M3 came with an even bigger engine. The S65 V8 unit under the bonnet not only revs up to 8,400 RPM and creates an amazing sound all the way, but it also won the best engine award in the 3 to 4-liter category for 5 consecutive years between 2008 and 2012.

Now, with all that legacy behind it, it’s pretty obvious why the F80 M3 is so anticipated. It has some pretty big shoes to fill and, if anyone could pull it off, the BMW M division will do it. Can't wait to see what they have in store for us!
