The Ducati Scrambler Paul Smart Redefines Scrambler Luxury

Putting things bluntly, this Paul Smart Ducati machine is unquestionably the sleekest Scrambler we saw this year. The project was initiated by Apichat Leenutaphong, Managing Director of Ducati Thailand, who got massive support from Paul Smart's wife Maggie, the sister of the great Bary Sheene.

Paul Smart has written down his name in the Ducati history books after he won the Imola 200 Miles race in 1972. Back then he not only beat stronger manufacturers such as Triumph, MV Agusta, Norton or BSA, but also riders credited with far better chances than him, with Phil Read, Walter Villa, and the world favourite, Giacomo Agostini to name just a few.

Mr. Leenutaphong wanted Paul Smart to bestow his vision upon a factory custom Scrambler that would revive the era when Ducati ascended into the road racing elite.

Aesthetic upgrades mimic era-correct details fro a bike with stunning personality

The Paul Smart Scrambler has not taken a trip on the wild side with tech upgrades, and it is "merely" a thing of beauty. The modifications solely address the aesthetics of the bike, but man, they truly do!

For starters, Paul wanted a bike that shows off a silver livery, so the tank and the tank badges were painted to resemble the SportClassic 1000LE Smart, which was created some time ago. A period correct Ducati logo now adorns the tank panels and a golden stripe with pinstriping details traverses it from side to side.

The frame was repainted in Sea Green and it contrasts beautifully with the black engine and engine cases, while the swingarm got the same green coat. Gold anodised forks match the tank stripe and are a perfect complement for the brown Alcantara custom seat.

Ducati could pick up the idea and dish out factory custom modding kits

Ducati Thailand had to create a clay representation of the tail section, because the seat cover had to be as racey and retro as it gets, harking back to the 1000 LE, bikeexif reports. After they had reached a shape Paul Smart was happy with, the clay model was 3D-scanned and replicated in aluminium. The side panels also went silver and aluminium was used for the front fender as well.

The Thai bike is most likely going to become a treasured exhibit for Ducati in Asian shows, but we can't help thinking about Borgo Panigale following into the steps of both BMW and Yamaha.

That is, creating a "custom universe" for the Scrambler, with modding kits that can be bolted on. The R nineT and the XV950 machines are faring quite well in this segment, and this is only to name one of the extensive Yamaha factory custom bikes range.
