The Ducati Monster Gets a New Brain

The Ducati Monster 696 now has a new electronic brain thanks to the hard work from the guys at Freescale and Synerject. The bike now has a 9 percent increase in power output and 11 percent more torque over the previous 695 model. This gives it the best horsepower per liter ratio of all Ducati air-cooled motorcycles.

“Motorcycle enthusiasts around the world will welcome this convergence of state-of-the-art electronics with renowned Ducati styling and engineering. By developing its latest family of advanced ECUs using Freescale technology, Synerject is setting new standards for efficient engine management and ultimately giving motorcyclists an exceptional riding experience,” Henri Richard, Freescale’s senior vice president, chief sales and marketing officer.

Synerject’s M3C ECU, known to be the best of the best, features Freescale’s high-performance S12X microcontroller (MCU), one of the most powerful and sophisticated ECU designed for a wide range of multi-cylinder and performance applications.

“Recent advancements in electronics are enabling vehicle manufacturers like Ducati to design more sophisticated and innovative engines than ever before. Freescale’s advanced microcontroller and sensor technology enables us to build powerful and multipurpose engine management systems that meet and exceed the increasing demand for higher performance in the motorcycle market,” Claude Chateignon, BU powertrain electronics for Continental stated.

The Ducati Monster 696 is named after its 696cc displacement and features an L-twin dual-cylinder Desmodromic engine generating 80 hp at 9000 rpm. It only weighs 161 kg and it is considered to be one of the most agile and light motorcycle in its class.

The monster is priced at $8,775 and is available in red, mate black and pearl white color schemes (for the more glamorous type).
