Just the other day we were telling that Abu Dhabi’s Police Force received a brand new Rolls-Royce Phantom for its fleet. Famous is the group of supercars used by Dubai's forces that aim at impressing the thousands of tourists that travel to the emirate every year. This time, we’re reporting about a brand new addition from the same niche: a BMW i8.
Looking at the rest of the line-up, you’d think that the Bimmer is far too cheap to be a part of it but the truth of the matter is, the technology it’s bringing to the table and its looks are what made it one of them.
It’s a rather peculiar choice nonetheless. The i8 was created to be an alternative to the UAE’s former main business, oil, being developed to sip as little as possible while being driven.
In that regard, the plug-in hybrid setup it has on board is rated at 121 mpg which is roughly around 2 l/100 km. Since gas is cheaper than water in Dubai, we reckon that fueling up such a beast wouldn’t be a problem.
Just look at the Aston Martin One-77 or the Bentley or the McLaren that the fleet has and you’ll notice that all of their engines are gas guzzlers, without a trace of a doubt.
In the meantime the i8, even with its futuristic design looks a bit overshadowed due to its 1.5-liter 3-cylinder petrol, turbocharged engine. What’s not to be overlooked though is the fact that overall, the car has 362 HP and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal and all-wheel drive which help her reach 100 km/h (62 mph) in only 4.4 seconds from a standstill.
As stated by the officials from the Dubai Police force, these cars are not for chasing down bad guys, unfortunately. They will only be used in areas that are most likely to be visited by tourists and only for show off.
