The Caterham Seven 620 Receives “S” Pack and Widebody Chassis

From now on, Caterham customers have two more options to choose from before buying a Seven 620. We're talking about an “S” pack and, for the first time, a wide-bodied S5 chassis.

The Caterham Seven 620S is a tamed version of the hardcore 620R and features a full windscreen, hood and side screens, as well as leather seats.

Those who want the wide-bodied S5 chassis will have to pay 2,500 pounds for this extra option. The S5 is wider and longer than the standard S3 and features more interior and luggage space and increased range thanks to a larger fuel tank.

The 620S is powered by a supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder Ford Duratec engine pushing 310 horsepower to the rear wheels through a proper five-speed manual transmission. The car sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 3.44 seconds and has a top speed of 145 mph.

For the sake of saving as much weight as possible, the vehicle has carbon fiber interior panels and dash, and the lightweight flywheel from the 620R, which together bring the car’s total weight down at 610 kilograms.

Although the 620R is a very minimalist car, designed not to distract you from driving, the S has some more civilized options, including a heater, full windscreen, hood and side screens, leather seats and road springs and dampers. The uprated brake master cylinder and the limited slip differential are taken from the R, for maximum performance. The 620S now sits on 15-inch Orcus anthracite alloy wheels fitted with more road-suited tires.

For those who want to take their Caterham for a spin even when it's cold outside, the company introduces, for the first time in a Seven, heated carbon seats, which are available as an option on all models in its range. As the vehicle comes standard with leather seats, an upgrade to carbon seats is available for an extra 600 pounds or 995 pounds for heated carbon seats.

According to Graham Macdonald, Caterham Cars CEO, “When we launched the 620R, we knew that we were unleashing a beast upon the world. It’s never been one for the faint-hearted and should really come with its own health warning. But we are, of course, sensitive also to those customers who want the ridiculous performance stats without having to worry about donning race overalls to access them. The new options mean that customers who want the best of both worlds can have exactly that, whether their aim is to pound around the race tracks of the UK or take a Sunday drive, albeit a deliriously exciting one.”

Customers can already order the “S” pack and the S5 chassis, and first deliveries are expected later this year.
