The Cars General Motors Will Discontinue As Part Of the Massive Plant Closures

It all started with a rumor about the closure of GM Oshawa in December 2019, but General Motors confirmed the worst-case scenario. No less than five plants in North America will be shuttered by the end of 2019, and in the process, 15 percent of the salaried workforce will have to look elsewhere for a job.

These circumstances also translate to the discontinuation of several models from the lineup, starting with the Chevrolet Impala and Cadillac XTS. Both are manufactured in Oshawa, where General Motors also makes the old generations of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra. These trucks will be discontinued by December 2019, leaving the T1 alone on dealership lots.

Over at Detroit Hamtramck, the biggest of the Big Three in Detroit rolls out the Buick LaCrosse, Chevrolet Volt, Cadillac CT6, and Chevrolet Impala. It remains to be seen if the LaCrosse and Volt will live on past March 1st, but the Impala is going out without the proverbial bang. CT6 production, on the other hand, will be relocated.

Over in Lordstown, General Motors has been making the Cruze for quite a few years now. But on March 1st, the assembly line of the compact sedan will cease operation, waiting to be dismantled by the people who helped make the car in the first place.

The Warren plant is also getting the ax, and for good measure. This is where the automaker produces the six-speed transmissions for the XTS, Impala, Malibu, Volt, and Acadia along with the Global Front Wheel Electric system for the Volt. If this translates to the end of the Volt, here's hope General Motors understands what it means to pull the plug on this once popular nameplate.

Last, but certainly not least, Baltimore Operations will cease to produce K2 and T1 full-size pickup trucks on April 1st, 2019. All told, these facilities in North America employ 5,901 hourly workers and 804 salaried employees.

To make matters worse, General Motors also announced the shuttering of two factories outside North America in addition to the Gunsan plant in South Korea. A recent report on the latter describes how Gunsan turned into a ghost town because of the closure, leaving 2,000 workers jobless.

LATER EDIT

According to our friends at Motor Authority, General Motors will discontinue all of these models. The Cadillac CT6, on the other hand, will live on in China exclusively for China.
