Herbert Diess, Development Chief for BMW recently said that BMW acknowledges the need for a city car, especially in this current day and age, and that his company will not disappoint its customers.
In a interview for Auto Motor und Sport, Diess said that BMWs new i3 has been developed following the market demand. The market research done by BMW showed that customers want not only a 2 seater car but more in the likes of a 4 seater with ample storage, in the shape of a small, 2 seater. That is the niche that the i3 will fill in the following years.

Of course, the timing for the i3 launch doesn't seem perfect. Recently, electric cars have taken a blow though there are some reasons for optimism, but BMW is not concerned. According to Diess, this really isn't a bad time for the launch of the i3.

BMW has always been a pioneer in the industry. And according to him, this is what will happen with the i3 too. Using a mix of conventional and alternative powered cars will, on the long run, fulfill the needs for fuel economy of both the US and the EU markets.

Thinking about the future CO2 emission levels in the EU (that will have to be under 100g/km) this is the only way to go. Also, Diess said that, in the near future, in order not to lose the full driving experience, customers will definitely be more and more interested in car-sharing options. Today there are almost 75,000 people using car-sharing services and demands are increasing monthly on a double digit rate.
