The BMW i Remote App Amongst the First Ones for Apple’s New Watch

Probably the biggest news of yesterday and today (if you’re a tech savvy kind of guy/girl) is the launch of Apple’s new smart watch. Called simply the ‘Apple Watch’ it was introduced yesterday by the company’s current CEO, Mr. Tim Cook with all the usual bells and whistles.
The price tag is what surprised us the most initially because while the thing will start at $349 it can go up to $17,000 and that’s Rolex territory right there. Of course, a Rolex won’t allow you to check your messages from your wrist but it will also not run out of battery after just a day.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I noticed that a lot of car guys out there also have a passion for watches. I’m a crazy-passionate man when it comes to timepieces and yet, this digital revolution companies are proposing is not making any sense to me right now.

Some even call me crazy when I tell them that I sleep with my watch on my wrist but it’s just how I do. Now, how can I use this Apple Watch if it has to be recharged for 2 or 3 hours every day? Some would say that would be easy to do at night but I wear my watch all day and night long. That’s definitely not a solution.

I do like the things its proposing though. No, I don’t care about checking my e-mail in a small 2” screen (at best) or about dictating a message for my phone (you know how bad speech recognition programs are, imagine using one on a busy street to answer a business e-mail...) but I do like the idea of using one to check out my car’s status.

That’s what BMW and Apple are going to offer with the BMW i Remote App. Showcased on Samsung Galaxy Gear up until now as it was the best smartwatch on the market, the Apple Watch will also get this app for its potential customers.

The app itself will be free to download just like it was until now (for the iPhone) and will allow you to check out your car’s status and perform a couple of feats like open and close the windows, honk the horn and turn on the AC during hot days.

For now, the things a smart watch can do are limited regarding autos but if the manufacturers managed to make them work as key fobs for our rides, I’m interested. Getting to my car and simply opening the door with no key fob in my pocket or even nearby looks good to me.

Of course, there will be some issues to deal with especially if the batteries run out (both of the watch and the car) but I’m sure the brilliant minds in Bavaria (and not only) will be able to find a solution. How long until we actually log into our cars?
