The BMW 3.0CSL Hommage R Sound Is a Bit Underwhelming

I think it’s safe to assume that we all agree that the BMW 3.0CSL Hommage R Concept is a stunning car to look at, right? Maybe the original 3.0CSL Hommage model wasn’t all that good looking due to its peculiar color choice but the R version is something else.

The M stripes thrown here and there on its body are a direct throwback at the original 3.0CSL from the 1960s and 1970s, the one car that started the Motorsport madness and dominated motorsport events of the era.

It’s not only that but its creators have personally admitted that this is an homage to the car that is still regarded by BMW enthusiasts as a sort of unicorn. In various configurations, back in those days (over 40 years ago) it could develop up to 850 HP from its 3-liter inline 6-cylinder engine.

Well, it seems like the concept is using the same architecture and size but with a different exhaust. Unfortunately, since its aim wasn’t to impress with the performance but more with its styling and weight, no official numbers were offered.

However, during a private showing in Paris, BMW officials started the engine of the 3.0CSL Hommage R and the sound it made was easy to recognize as coming from a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder mill. Our guess is that it’s the same unit from the new M3 and M4 models, but it’s really hard to say right now. We were not all that impressed with the sound in the first place and that may be a clear indicator that our supposition is true.

Either way, the S55 engine would make it a rather fast model if we’re to consider the power output (431 HP and 406 lb-ft) and the fact that it is supposed to weigh as little as possible. No exact numbers were offered in this regard either but since the whole thing is claimed to have been built with a scale in mind, we’re guessing well under 1,500 kg (3,300 lbs).

While we’re still waiting for some design cues from the BMW 3.0CSL Hommage R to be used on production models, you can enjoy its sound via the video below.
