The Birth of the Erzberg Rodeo

It’s hard to pinpoint which is the world’s toughest, most demanding or craziest enduro race, but the Erzbergrodeo in Austria is definitely one of the top such events. This year, 1500 off-road maniacs from over 40 countries and 5 continents will test their skills and the endurance of their machines against the Iron Giant in Austria.

This year’s Erzbergrodeo marks the 20th anniversary of this hardcore event. It’s no secret that only a handful of riders can make it past the 20th and the final checkpoint of this incredibly demanding race, which takes around 4 hours from start to finish… that is, in case you’re one of the very few who manage to avoid giving up.

What was an 120-rider event in its early stages back in 1996, turned out to become twice the size the next, year, and has grown to more than tenfold in the present days. The rodeo also grew in terms of classes, and now the King’s Class sees big-bore twin-cylinder machines such as KTM and BMWs pitted against each other on the sloped of Erzberg.

Even more, the Iron Giant has begun welcoming milder riders who want to experience the less hardcore side of the rodeo, while outdoor Endurocross events became regular since 2007. The 2014 Erzbergrodeo will take place May 29-June 1st in Eisenerz, Austria,a nd you can check with the official Erzberg website for more info.
