The Autobahn Might Get an Obnoxious Speed Limit

A new controversial proposal that comes from Germany’s traffic minister Winfried Hermann might put an end to unlimited speed portions on the Autobahn by setting a 120 km/h (75mph) speed limit.
We are sure everybody knows some things about the Autobahn, but car enthusiasts only need one: portions with no speed limit. The state of Baden-Wurttemberg, which is also known as the home of Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, Audi’s Quattro GmbH branch, and auto supplier Bosch, is said to be the first German state to impose such a strict speed limit.

Not everyone seems to love the Autobahn as much as we do, though. Winfried Hermann, an active member of the Green Party, has stated that the additional speed limits are a trial and he intends to hold them for four years. For this “experiment,” only some stretches of the Autobahn were selected, but according to caranddriver.com, he intends to eventually implement a general speed limit in the entire country.

In fact, in Germany, only about 30 percent of the highway network is speed-limited. Starting with May 2016, when these changes are set to happen, the Baden-Wurttemberg state should increase that percentage by quite a bit.

As you would have expected, this move has generated a lot of attention in the media. The German car industry is also very concerned, because its cars mostly rely on autobahn high speed testing. Let’s face it, everyone knows a German bred sports car can travel all day long at three-digit speeds without too much stress, have great performance, durability and high-speed stability.

You are not the only ones who are wondering how they will still brag about these things in the future if this speed-limit is implemented. As a wise man once said, you should never lose your hope. Back in 2013, the same Green Party tried to implement a 75mph national speed-limit but, luckily, it went nowhere. Let’s all hope this will happen once again, and why not, the minister who will take Winfried Hermann's place will be more of a car enthusiast.
