The Android Auto Nightmare Continues With a Glitch Breaking Down the Phone App

While Google keeps working on refining the experience with Android Auto, it doesn’t necessarily mean everything is already running just flawlessly.

And Volvo owners have recently discovered this the hard way, as some of them are now struggling with a bug in Android Auto that breaks down the phone call support.

More specifically, while the function of making and receiving calls still works properly, opening the phone app on Android Auto is no longer possible, as the screen just displays an uncanny error instructing them to end other calls.

Needless to say, there’s no other active call, and users claim nothing has worked so far to bring back the normal behavior of the phone app. “To place a new call, end other calls and try again,” the message showing up on the screen reads.

Interestingly, it looks like Volvo cars are most often affected, and users on this Google support thread explain it also happens on Android 11. Someone says the glitch still occurs after a software update performed by a Volvo dealership, so right now, all signs seem to suggest the one to blame is Android Auto itself.

Volvo V60 - dealer updated it to the latest software but no improvement. Used to work fine. You can still make and receive calls, but only using a ‘recent calls’ list in the instrument cluster,” one user explains.

At this point, Google is yet to acknowledge the problem, so users are all alone in their attempt to find a workaround. If anything, users who are 100 percent sure Android Auto is the culprit could try to downgrade to an earlier version of the application and see if the problem is gone. If it is, then sticking with an older Android Auto build could be the solution until a full fix arrives.

The next Android Auto update is expected in January as version 6.0, though at this point, no specifics are obviously known as to what it’ll include.
