The 2020 Shelby GT500 Is More Expensive Than the GT350R, Configurator Goes Live

Ford is getting cheeky with the pricing of the Mustang Shelby series as you can tell from the screenshot of the 2020 configurator for the U.S. market. To the surprise of everyone out there, the GT350R is more expensive than the GT500 by $535 before options and excluding the destination charge.
Part of the reason the Voodoo V8-engined pony car is more expensive comes in the guise of carbon-fiber wheels instead of flow-formed aluminum wheels in the case of the GT500. The Predator V8-engined muscle car is available with carbon-fiber wheels too as part of the Carbon Fiber Track Pack, which adds… wait for it… $18,500 to the tally. Moving forward, the Technology Package and Handling Pack are priced at $3,000 and $1,500, respectively.

But the options list doesn’t end there, oh no it doesn’t! Twister Orange paintwork retails at $495, painted racing stripes cost $10,000, and the painted black roof is $695. Ford Performance knows how to squeeze every cent from Mustang Shelby GT500 customers far better than Dodge, don’t you think? Even when specified with all the bells and whistles, the 797-horsepower Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye in Widebody flavor doesn’t surpass $100,000.

Rear-seat delete and a B&O sound system are two more options worth mentioning, as well as voice-activated touchscreen navigation with SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link. What’s most surprising about the price point of the Shelby GT500 is that the EcoBoost Fastback retails at $26,670 before destination charge, making the base ‘Stang far more affordable.

As much as we played with the U.S. configurator, we couldn’t go higher than $107,000 for the king of the ‘Stangs. That’s ludicrous by all accounts, and looking back, the same was said about the seventh generation of the Chevrolet Corvette in ZR1 specification. You know, the front-engined American sports car with 755 horsepower and a top speed of 212 mph.

Ford Performance couldn’t do better than 180 mph from 760 horsepower, but the Blue Oval didn’t develop the Shelby GT500 to be faster than the ZR1 or Redeye. Handling is of the essence here, and the GT350R is proof of how well the Mustang can handle in the twisties and on the race track.
