If you’re shopping for a full-size pickup truck with heavy-duty capabilities, look no further than the 2020 Ford Super Duty. The Blue Oval has re-engineered the workhorse to such an extent that the Super Duty claims six best-in-class accolades, starting with 37,000 pounds of gooseneck towing capacity when properly equipped.
This rating is possible only with the 6.7-liter Power Stroke V8, a turbo diesel with best-in-class horsepower and torque (475 and 1,050). Fifth-wheel towing of up to 32,500 pounds, conventional towing of up to 24,200 pounds, and a payload capacity of 7,850 pounds with the 6.2-liter gasoline V8 engine are the other highlights of the 2020 model year.

As for the sixth best-in-class braggadocio, Ford offers a 7.3-liter gasoline V8 with 430 horsepower and 475 pound-feet. Also called Godzilla, the pushrod engine makes perfect sense in a truck with this type of gross vehicle weight rating. The mapping is designed to run a stoichiometric air-fuel ratio without spark retard, and you’re also treated to a cast-iron block, forged steel for the crankshaft, and oil jets for cooling the pistons.

“Ford truck customers are building a better world with Super Duty and we’re helping them work even harder with the most available diesel towing, payload, torque, and power you can get in a heavy-duty pickup,” declared Mike Pruitt, Super Duty chief engineer, at the State Fair of Texas.

The F-Series Super Duty range starts with the F-250, but the F-350 and F-450 do the hardest work. An all-new TorqShift 10-speed automatic transmission is also featured, and so far, the heavy-duty trucks have accumulated 19 million miles of testing to ensure that everything is Built Ford Tough.

2020 models also make connectivity standard thanks to FordPass Connect, an embedded 4G LTE modem with Wi-Fi connectivity for up to 10 devices. Wireless charging, USB-C charging ports, and Lane-Keeping Alert are a few other goodies worth mention, to which we’d also add BLIS with Trailer Coverage, Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, and even second-row seat belt pretensioners.

Like the outgoing model year, the 2020 Ford Super Duty is built in America at the Kentucky Truck Plant in Louisville and Ohio Assembly Plant in Avon Lake. Dealers will get the first examples of the breed by year’s end according to the Ford Motor Company.
