The Taycan is big news for the automotive industry, a German-developed sports sedan with an all-electric powertrain, all-wheel drive, and up to 751 horsepower (761 PS) in overboost mode. As expected of the Internet community, some people aren’t prepared to jump onto the hype train.
Tesla took to Instagram - sharing a post from CarForce 24/7 - to illustrate that the Model S Performance is a better deal altogether in comparison to the Taycan Turbo S. Before anything, it should be mentioned that the Taycan Turbo S doesn’t even feature a turbocharger under the hood.
This gets us to the first strike, and that’s marketing. Model S Performance leaves no ambiguity over the Tesla. As you can tell from the Instagram post, acceleration also favors the full-size sedan from Fremont (2.4 seconds to 60 miles per hour as opposed to 2.6 seconds for the Porsche).
Top speed? A recent over-the-air update enables 163 miles per hour in the Tesla (262 km/h) while the Taycan maxes out at 161 miles per hour (259 km/h). The post overestimates the Porsche with 162 mph, but that’s still not enough to hold the larger Model S Performance at bay.
Next up, battery capacity and EPA-rated electric range. The Performance plays second fiddle to the Long Range due to the go-faster goodies, but 345 miles still is a better range than the Porsche. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have figures yet, which gets us to the WLTP ratings.
The European numbers also favor the Tesla at 365 miles for the Performance while the Taycan Turbo and Turbo S manage 279 and 256 miles, respectively. Only a few kWh set these babies apart, and if you were wondering, the Model S is pretty much the same weight as the Taycan mid-sized fastback.
Last, but certainly not least, pricing is the most obvious differentiator given the different backgrounds of the two automakers and different approach to the production process. At $99,990 in the U.S. compared to $185k before destination charge, the elephant in the room can’t be ignored.
On that note, Tesla would like to find out “which one do you prefer?” Have your say here or head on to Instagram to make a case for your favorite performance EV.
