Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk revealed that his company is planning to develop an all-electric pickup truck that will rival Ford’s popular F-150 - also known as the best-selling vehicle in the United States.
“If you’re trying to replace the most gasoline miles driven, you have to look at what people are buying. That’s the best-selling car in America. If people are voting that’s their car, then that’s the car we have to deliver,” Musk said after an appearance at a Business Insider conference. However, he stressed that such a vehicle is about five years away.
The idea of an electric pickup truck is not exactly new at Tesla. Elon Musk said back in April that the EV manufacturer is pondering “a really advanced electric truck that has the performance of a sportscar but actually more towing power and more carrying capacity than a gasoline or diesel truck of comparable size”.
The Ford F-Series sold 560,000 examples in the United States in the first nine months of the year.
