Tesla Simplifies Lineup By Discontinuing Standard Range Model S, Model X

A number of changes are coming to Tesla’s lineup starting with the Standard Range versions of the Model S and Model X. By discontinuing these variants, the Long Range with all-wheel drive becomes the entry-level option at $79,990 for the sedan and $84,990 for the crossover.

As if that wasn’t enough of a change, the full-self driving capability is $1,000 more expensive than before. The Model 3, on the other hand, gets $1,000 cheaper regardless of trim level, which means $38,990 for the Standard Range Plus.

Let that information sink in for a moment, then remember how many things are going behind closed doors at Tesla. Elon Musk is an ambitious man, and as a result, continuous changes to the S, 3, and X are a necessity. This state of affairs follows a record quarter that ended on June 30th, marking the production of 87,048 vehicles and the delivery of 95,200 vehicles.

The assembly plant in Fremont, California will soon be joined by another facility in Shanghai, China where the Model 3 and Model Y will be produced. The two share many parts in order to keep the costs as low as possible, and chances are the Gigafactory 3 will be online by the end of 2020.

Morgan Stanley expects Tesla to dominate the Chinese luxury EV segment over the next five years, more so if you remember the government makes it extremely attractive for the customers to go fully electric. Something that isn’t as attractive is placing an order on the Model 3 sedan with the Standard Range option, which can be done only in-store or over the phone.

If you were wondering how much the locally-made Model 3 costs in China, the order guide opens with 328,000 yuan before options. That’s $47,675 at the current exchange rate. The Performance retails at 499,900 yuan in the Middle Kingdom, translating to $72,660.

Elon Musk expects Tesla post record results in the third quarter of the year, and all eyes are on the Model 3. About 80 percent of total sales are Model 3s, which goes to show how important the all-electric sedan is for the automaker from Palo Alto, California.
