Tesla's Supercharger Network Receives New Liquid-Cooled Charging Cables

With the Supercharger network, Tesla is not only looking for quantity - that is a large number of charging locations - but also quality, in the sense that Elon Musk's company wants Model S charging to be as efficient as possible.

The mastermind behind Tesla Motors, Space X and Hyperloop announced last week during the annual shareholders' meeting the introduction of a cooling cable system for the Supercharger network. Also, the CEO said this solution will be available soon at all charging locations.

The recent video uploaded by YouTube user KmanAuto suggests Musk kept his word, as someone filmed the new Superchargers using thermal imaging. As you can see in the unaltered images, there's not much difference between the new and old Superchargers, except for a row of air vents at the bottom.

Also, Teslarati reports that the cooling substance inside the cable is propylene glycol, antifreeze agent often used in automotive applications.

As you'll see in the video, the cable remains just slightly over ambient temperature while his car is being charged. Moreover, the air used to cool the liquid coming out of the charging station is just a few degrees warmer than the outside air.

This looks good so far, but we're sure Elon Musk's statement regarding solar power for the Supercharger grid is far more interesting. Tesla's CEO also added that other renewable electricity sources will be made available.

As we speak, the Supercharger network is in a full expansion process, not only in the US but also around the world, in Europe and Asia. You can find a timelapse animation video showing Tesla's Supercharger rise around the globe here.
