According to a Motor Trend story published today, the Model Y is going to be an electric flying car. Apparently, Elon Musk himself confirmed it, but it's just April Fools stuff. Nobody likes the first day of April more than us tech folks, who aren't very funny for the rest of the year.
I remember watching an MT comparison between the Tesla Roadster and a Porsche Boxster Spyder in 2010. One guy said that he sees Porsche eventually turning to electricity, even in Le Mans, and he was right.
We're hoping the Model Y will be an electric sportscar, not the cheaper crossover everyone wants. Just look at this baby! Theophilus Chin took some of the design elements from the Model 3 and made them into something that would put the BMW Z4 to shame.
It will take some time before all of us regular folks who don't think like designers will be able to understand Tesla's design language. The grille is completely gone now, but it's also suggested, like the leg bones of a whale hint at its terrestrial roots.
Since pre-orders began last night, over 100,000 people have bought the $35,000 Model 3, despite never driving it. The only specs that are available include seating for five people and the capacity to reach 60 mph in 6 seconds.
People will buy almost anything as long as it's a Tesla. So why not make this instead of another family car?
