Tesla Reveals New Models in IPO Filing

The anticipated initial public offering (IPO) to be made by American EV manufacturer Tesla Motors as soon as next week has been the perfect opportunity for the company to present its "frickin’ technology velociraptor,” as Elon Musk calls his vehicles.

The new product plan was also revealed by Elon Musk during the investor roadshow he is currently taking across the US. According to the presentation, all future Tesla models will share a common powertrain, an adaptable common platform and "revolutionary" packaging.

As you already know, Tesla currently has only one model in its offering: the Roadster. For 2012, Tesla plans to release the Model S sedan. After that, the sky is the limit, as Tesla will expand with a convertible, a crossover and even a van to just about all segments of the automotive market. A lower-cost model is also planned, should the collaboration with Toyota at the former NUMMI plant will materialize.

"We are designing the Model S to have an adaptable platform architecture and common electric powertrain in order to allow us to efficiently create other electric vehicles, which may include, as examples, a crossover/sport utility vehicle, van or a cabriolet," Tesla says in the filing with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

"In May 2010, we publicly announced our intent to develop a third generation electric vehicle to be produced at our planned manufacturing facility in Fremont, California. We intend to offer this vehicle at a lower price point and expect to produce it at higher volumes than our planned Model S. We expect that this vehicle will be produced a few years after the introduction of the Model S."

Back to the IPO, Tesla's filing points to the offering of 10,000,000 shares, with an additional 1,100,000 shares to be provided to specific stockholders. The company will be listed under “TSLA,” with the proposed maximum offering price per share set at $16.
