It could be argued that the biggest problem Tesla faces at this moment is related to its production process. Up until now, as a fringe carmaker that not only produces vehicles with a not very sought after propulsion system but also very expensive ones, its low volumes did not cause an issue.
Due to the long waiting time between the introduction of the Model X and the time its deliveries actually started, the electric SUV did manage to build something of a waiting list, but that'll soon be sorted out. As will be its much talked about quality problems.
The real challenge now lies with the upcoming Model 3. With 373,000 reservations under the belt and more than one year to go until production starts, Tesla has to make sure it will be able to meet the demand at one point, and that means ramping up production from the way too relaxed current rhythm.
Yesterday, Elon Musk's company held one of its Tesla Weekend Social events where some of its officials meet with owners and enthusiasts to talk about everything Tesla-related. Well, maybe not really "everything," as these get-togethers are usually themed, and this month's circled around the Tesla Factory.
That's how we found out (via Electrek) that the Fremont factory has now reached a 2,000 vehicles per week mark, which equals to about 104,000 units annually. That is still pretty far from the 500,000 cars that Tesla plans to build during the course of one year by 2018, but it does mark a 500 percent increase over the 20,000 units it built during its first year.
Other news referred to the balance between the Model S and Model X, with the former still having the upper hand over the latter, but only just slightly. The number of cars that require extra works after exiting the production line is also dwindling, with less than 10 percent of the total output falling in this category. Of course, most of those cars are Model Xs.
