Everybody laughed at Tesla when they started making the Roadster. We were convinced batteries were too heavy and lacked the range needed for a real world application. Yet somehow between celebrities buying them and the Model S launching, we are now dealing with a totally different type of automaker. Right now, Tesla Motors is worth about $18 billion and could easily fund the development of a model like this, an electric pickup truck.
It's easy to dismiss it at just another crazy idea that will never work in the real world, but we did that with the Model S and we were totally wrong. If you really think long and hard about it, isn't electric mobility ideal for work vehicles?
A company that sells bio food would certainly buy a an electric pickup, and so might some of the hundreds of thousands of people who buy the Ford F-150 and Chevy Silverado every year. Making the Tesla Model P isn't going to be as easy as chopping the back off a sedan. Lots of testing needs to be done to ensure the batteries are not damaged by offroad use.
Without a doubt, we'll be driving electric pickups in the future, but there's something so "Merica" about the whole idea. We might as well call it Model W after everybody's favorite pickup loving ex president.
