It's not comfortable fighting on more than one front line, but that's something carmakers need to do, and Tesla Motors makes no exception.
Between building the Gigafactory and launching the new Model X EV crossover, Elon Musk's company must make sure customers are kept satisfied long after they bought a Model S.
So the company's latest move has nothing to do with China or Japan but focuses on another high-density area, namely New York.
According to the New York Times, Tesla Motors wants to make life easier for Tesla Model S customers who live, work and have to commute into Manhattan by offering charging stations.
In other words, Tesla Motors will reveal a partnership with "two dozen garages around Manhattan", where the company will install high-speed 240-volt chargers where Tesla owners will be able to juice up their cars' battery packs and continue their journey through the urban jungle.
Is this a good idea? Well, of course, if we take some time and think about the fact that a dense urban setting coupled with stop-and-go traffic and drivers who only travel short distances is the perfect environment for electric cars to thrive in.
After the company built a series of Supercharger sites along highways, it was about time they focused on providing charging services in urban areas as well, a decision that we're sure Model S owners will be glad to welcome.
Speaking to the same source, Alexis Georgeson, a Tesla spokeswoman, explained why the brand decided to offer urban charging in Manhattan:
“We wanted to move to an urban charging network that meets the needs of those who live in apartments or commute into a big city. “Naturally, Manhattan was the place to try this for the first time.”
Also, the plan will permit Model S owners to park by the hour, day, week and even month at those selected garages, but electricity will not come free. No fees are yet made public, because each garage will set its desired charge, in addition to what they're already charging for parking services.
