Tesla Motors Wants to Fit a Battery in Your Home

No, that doesn’t mean your home can now go places based on a maximum range as Teslas’s Model S and Roadster do, but the idea is likely to threaten the traditional electric grid if it gains momentum.

Having built a name for themselves after developing the all-electric Model S sedan, Tesla wants to take things to a whole new level by using lithium-ion battery technology to break the energy-storage market. For houses, that is, according to Bloomberg.

Now, while you carefully re-read the last paragraph, let us tell you that Elon Musk himself was the promoter of such an idea by saying that “we are going to unveil the Tesla home battery, the consumer battery that would be for use in people’s houses or businesses fairly soon”.

Again, this won’t mean that business meetings will start with the question “What’s the range on this office, sir?” but looking at the bigger picture, we might be looking at a rupture between homeowners and electricity suppliers.

Since most homeowners will consider avoiding utility fees by going off the grid, Tesla’s energy storage product might be their best weapon of choice. Take it as good or bad news, but Musk also added that the battery’s design is already wrapped up and “it should start going into production in about six months or so”.

The principle is actually a rather simple one and is based on solar panels combined with efficient batteries. Add the fact that SolarCity has already made progress in installing Tesla batteries (but for now, only on commercial buildings such as Walmart stores) and we could be facing a real revolution here.

Plus, it should be said that SolarCity is also running a pilot project that uses Tesla’s 10 kWh battery packs to power homes for about two days in case of an outage. Put all these information together and you’ll see why utilities will have to learn to adapt or start shaking and disappear in the near future.
