One Gigafactory is not enough for Tesla's world dominance plan, and Elon Musk knows that very well. For that reason, he is looking to open another similar facility in Japan.
Clues that Elon Musk is looking to build a new Gigafactory besides the one Tesla is working on in Nevada are not very hard to get. And since superchargers already made their way out of North America, why couldn't another Gigafactory be opened on a different strip of land, even if that happens to be Japan.
Of course, we've mentioned Japan for a reason. That's because the Land of the Rising Sun could host Tesla's second Gigafactory in the future. As Bloomberg reports, a Tesla official was courting suppliers last week regarding a future facility Tesla might spawn in the area.
"We need to take risks, otherwise there will be no prosperity in business. We take risks, but it seems not the case in Japan," said Kurt Kelty, Tesla's director of battery technology, during a meeting in Osaka. Given Tesla's partnerships with a handful of Japanese suppliers - including big players like Panasonic and Denso - the possibility of a Japan-based Gigafactory is not looking far-fetched from where we're standing.
In fact, Panasonic's ties with Elon Musk's brand are stronger than ever. Tha's because Panasonic is not only Tesla's battery pack supplier but will also supervise the li-ion cell production process at the Nevada Gigafactory.
Much of that effort will go into powering the upcoming Tesla Model III so Tesla might need another plant to carry on with expansion plans around the world.
