Tesla Motors Can Now Sell Cars Directly in New Jersey

Wheels are finally turning for Tesla in New Jersey after in 2014 Elon Musk’s company was denied the right to sell cars directly, without using dealerships.

The Garden State will be added on Tesla’s US coverage map as local customers will be able to buy one of Tesla’s electric products directly, without having to contact a dealership first. The news came out after governor Chris Christie turned into law a bill that basically lifts the ban imposed on Tesla’s sales initiative last year.

But, and there’s a but here, Tesla has to agree a set of conditions before being able to establish direct sales operations directly to NJ consumers. One of the terms says that Tesla can only open a total of four direct-to-driver sales points. Moreover, the carmaker must also operate at least one service center.

This should come as a relief for Elon Musk and his company given the fact that Tesla’s direct sales policy is still banned in Arizona, Virginia, Texas and Michigan. In addition, New Jersey is Unites States’ fourth largest market for luxury automobiles, after New York, Florida and California so lifting the aforementioned ban will also help the company’s finances, especially after sales went down in California and China.

In the meantime, Elon Musk is still determined to prove the world that direct sales are a game-changer for the entire automotive industry:

“We strongly believe it is vital to introduce our own vehicles to the market because electric cars are still a relatively new technology. This model is not just a matter of selling more cars and providing optimum consumer choice for Americans, but also educating consumers about the benefits of going electric [...],” explained Elon Musk last year on Tesla's website.
