Tesla Model Y Crossover Will Have Falcon Doors, Deleted Musk Tweet Confirms

One of the most outspoken CEOs in the car business, Elon Musk recently had a slight PR mishap after he tweeted some rather interesting details about a fourth Tesla Motors model.

It all happened just days after the 2016 Tesla Model X was officially unveiled, so Musk was very active on Twitter to promote and explain certain details about the new crossover. In a response to a tweet from @AwesomelyOZ, Tesla's head honcho let it slip that “there will be a Model 3 and a Model Y. One of the two will (have Falcon doors, ed).”

The Model Y name comes as no surprise, as the moniker was already trademarked by Tesla Motors back in August 2013. In case in wasn't obvious by now, the upcoming Tesla lineup will consist of the Model S, 3, X and Y, and it doesn't take a scientist to realize that it's going to spell “SEXY.”

That the Model Y will be a crossover was also somewhat implied already, since Tesla's chief technical officer JB Straubel confirmed that the 2018 Model 3 will come in both sedan and crossover guises.

What was not known until Elon Musk's now-deleted tweet is that the Model Y will feature a similar arrangement for the rear doors as the recently unveiled Model X. This is despite the fact that the Model Y will be smaller and a lot less expensive than the Model X, and those Falcon doors are definitely not cheap to produce. In other words, Musk is convinced that when the Gigafactory will be completed it will help to cut the pricing of batteries used by Tesla models, in theory giving customers more bang for their bucks. This in turn frees up cash for fancy stuff like Falcon doors.

The only variables regarding the upcoming Model 3 and Model Y revolve around their launch dates, which heavily rely on the Gigafactory being completed as soon as possible.
