Tesla Model X Crossover to Debut in Frankfurt

Up until now, the only offering from the Silicon Valley-based Tesla Motors has been the all-electric Roadster, a two-seater sportscar. The company is also planning to offer its next product, the Model S sedan, for sale next year. However, according to Car and Driver, there’s also a new crossover in the works.

It will reportedly be called the Model X and should be unveiled at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. This information sounds credible, as Tesla CEO Elon Musk has stated that we'll get to see the Model X before the end of the year, but the Los Angeles Auto Show is still a possibility.

The crossover will be based on the same basic architecture as the upcoming sedan model, but no clear specifications have been released yet. Should both of these cars make it to production, they will be followed by a coupe and a large SUV that sport the Tesla badge.

Presumably, the car will have all-wheel drive, something that is guaranteed for the SUV as well. Right now, it is unclear how Tesla will achieve such an arrangement. It’s possible that a new powertrain will be created that drives the front wheels independently of the rear ones. The current lithium-ion battery pack will no doubt be carried over from the sedan.

If the debut of the Model X will actually take place in Frankfurt, this will be the first time that Tesla has used a major show to introduce a new car, as both the Roadster and the sedan were launched at smaller events.
