While everybody (including Tesla themselves) have only been talking about the top of the range Model S sedan, with the 85 kWh battery pack, it is a bit on the expensive side, and it may even be overkill for those with shorter commutes, and smaller wallets.

Now, the EPA has rated the Model S, equipped with the mid-range 60 kWh battery pack, which still gives great numbers, for a noticeably lower price tag. It achieves 94 MPGe in the city and 97 MPGe on the highway, for a combined figure of 95 MPGe.
This means that it is more efficient than the more powerful 85 kWh battery pack-equipped car, which only averages 89 MPGe combined. Also, the quoted range drops from 265 miles/424 km on one charge for the largest pack, to 208 miles/332 km for the 60 kWh variant - still enough for most people’s needs, and keep in mind that with a light foot, a good tail wind and careful route planning, that figure can even be exceeded.
