Tesla Model S & Porsche Taycan: a Level-Headed Comparison, for a Change

The clip below was put together by the fine people at Roadshow and it tells you everything you need to know about these two cars, side by side. In the end, it's up to everyone to make up their minds. Ever since the Porsche Taycan was launched - nay, ever since the thought of its existence was mentioned - all people ever talked about was whether it'll be a better car than the current EV sedan benchmark: the Tesla Model S.
The answer to that question is very simple, albeit another question: what does 'better car' mean? Sadly, the answer to this second inquiry is a lot more complicated because it has about seven billion versions. Yes, everyone has different expectations from a vehicle, which is why carmakers have such a difficult job on their hands whenever they must come up with a new model.

Some people care about quarter-mile times. Some of them even race their vehicles, but most who fall in this category only care about the bragging rights. Or just that knowledge that you could smoke any car that's sitting next to you at a streetlight the moment it turned green if you would so be inclined.

Others care about luxury and craftsmanship. They will pick up a magnifying glass and look at all the stitching and the finishes with a big frown on their foreheads all this time. They'll run their hands on every surface and try to jiggle the center console out of its place. Finally, they'll mutter a verdict nobody other than themselves cares about.

When it comes to EVs, most people are worried about maximum range. It's a psychological thing. It's been proven times and times again that the vast majority of people would be OK with 200 miles (320 km) of range for their daily commute and some extra errands. And even though almost all new EVs can do at least that, it's still the main argument being raised against battery-powered cars.

Design also plays a very important role in people's choices, be it exterior or interior. The way we perceive the former is almost entirely subjective, but interior design also has a more practical ergonomic component. As for good or bad, bear in mind that even cars almost everybody agrees are as ugly as sin have found at least a few buyers over time, so there's something for everyone.

Finally, there's the price. This is where everyone needs to check their balance, their bank accounts, and their spouses before they can decide how much they can spend on a new car. It almost always is more than planned, because how could you say no to that option or the other?

Even though nobody asked, I'll give you my choice. I'd go for the Porsche Taycan. I prefer its design both inside and out, it has similar performance but improved handling, its maximum range meets my requirements, and it bears no ties with Mr. Elon Musk. Oh, yeah, I forgot to add this criterion to the list a well: the company's CEO might weigh in on the choice too.
