Yes, you heard that right, the upcoming and very, very much awaited Tesla Model 3 will be offered as a saloon but also in crossover guise. At least, this is what Tesla's chief technical officer claims.
First of all, let's have a look at Tesla Motors' ambitions and where is Elon Musk's car company looking to get in terms of sales. Speaking at the EIA Energy Conference in Washington DC, Tesla's CTO JB Straubel revealed that Tesla Motors is aiming towards a sales rate of 500,000 electric vehicles a year by 2020, according to InsideEVs.

But in order to reach that number, Tesla is putting high hopes on the Model 3. However, that's no easy task for the newcomer, which means the company will have to find a way to split the 200-mile, $35,000 Model 3 into two variants: one sedan and one crossover.

According to the same source, Mr. Straubel showed his full confidence in lithium battery-powered cars, a reason Tesla will look to develop vehicles beyond the Model 3.

If this is true, we're sensing that Tesla wants the Model 3 to be an accessible brand, rather than just a cheaper version of the Model S. Anyway, that would partially explain why Tesla Model 3 renderings showed the car in sedan, hatchback and crossover setup so far.

When Tesla Motors finally introduces it to the automotive world, Tesla Model 3 (at least in sedan guise) will be expected to compete against the likes of BMW 3 Series.

In terms of size, the Model 3 will be about 20 percent smaller than the Model S and should go on sale with a $35,000 sticker, due to cheaper battery tech produced by the Panasonic-enhanced Gigafactory. For that kind of money, clients will be offered an all-electric setup capable of going 200 or 300 miles (320 or 480 km) on a full battery charge.
