Tesla Model 3 Production Hits 1,000 Vehicles Per Day

The Tesla Factory in Fremont, California used to belong to General Motors from 1962 to 1982. Through 2009, the site was used by the New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc. joint venture between General Motors and Toyota. With the help of Tesla, the plant now produces 1,000 examples of the Model 3 per day in addition to the Model S and Model X.

Electrek reports Elon Musk told employees today, November 30th, that “body production appears to be our limiting factor, so it needs the most support right now.” The focus is on simplification, which can be found in every single component that goes into the electric sedan, no matter how small or large.

“Depending on how you count it, the current cost of a standard range Model 3 would be around $38,000,” said Musk, “so each part or process step only costs around $3.80. That means finding cost efficiencies is a game of pennies, even though it might not seem so.”

The efficiencies the chief executive officer is talking about include the “better packing density or rearranging process flow a fewer forklift moves,” which goes to show how much discipline is needed to make the Model 3 as fast as possible. After the mid- and long-range options, the Model 3 with the standard battery will go into production towards the end of the first quarter or at the beginning of Q2 in 2019.

European customers can expect the order books for the cheapest Tesla ever to open by the end of the year, with production scheduled to start in January 2019. First deliveries for this part of the world are planned for late February or early March, then Tesla will start production of RHD models for the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Musk claimed Tesla might not deliver cars in the Asia-Pacific region in Q1 of 2019, “but certainly in Q2.” As expected, the entry-level specification will be available in these markets too. When the Model 3 was revealed, Musk announced that the lesser option would start from $35,000 in the United States before the federal tax credit.
